How Old is Too Old?

How old is too old when it comes to training and competing? Dara Torres has re-written Olympic history and is competing in her 5th Olympics at age forty. On my rugby team alone we have over 6 women that are still playing well into their thirties and don't show any signs of slowing down.

Are sports changing or are we just staying fitter and more competitive longer?

Torres Is Getting Older, but Swimming Faster
Marc Serota for The New York Times

Dara Torres training in Coral Springs, Fla. Torres, a nine-time Olympic medalist, set the U.S. record for the 50-meter freestyle this summer.

Dara Torres, the fastest female swimmer in America, plunged toward the bottom of the pool, like a child scavenging for coins. She came up for a breath, grinning. The lanes next to hers pulsed with swimmers pushing themselves through 100- and 200-meter timed sprints, but Torres was under orders from her coach to rest, the better to let her 40-year-old body recover.

Dara Torres’s regular training regimen has her spending more time out of the pool than in it.

It was a Friday, the end of another unorthodox training week for Torres, a four-time Olympian who is doing less in the water to wring more results out of a swimming career that was supposed to have run dry by now.

Her day had begun just after dawn in the weight room, where she worked her legs until they quivered and her arms until they ached — without pressing a weight or lifting a dumbbell. The 90-minute workout was the first leg of her training triathlon. It was followed by 90 minutes of swimming and 60 minutes of stretching.

Torres’s training is cutting edge so that her personal pharmacy does not have to be. A nine-time Olympic medalist who made her first Olympic team in 1984, Torres is at a short-course meet in Berlin this weekend, representing the United States in the freestyle sprints in her last competition of the year. She has the 2008 Summer Games in her sights after winning the 100 freestyle and setting a United States record in the 50 freestyle at the national championships in August.

In a one-lap race, where personal bests are typically whittled by hundredths of a second, Torres’s progression is astounding. Her age adds to the intrigue. What she is doing would be akin to Roger Clemens’s throwing a fastball harder now, at 45, than he did 20 years ago or goaltender Ed Belfour’s coming out of retirement at 42 to post his career-best save percentage.

“I think what Dara’s doing is fantastic,” said Gary Hall Sr., who was 25 and considered ancient — his teammates nicknamed him the Old Man and the Sea — when he swam in his third Olympics in 1976. “It proves that we really don’t know what the peak age of performance is.”

For every person who marvels at Torres’s motor, there are others who wonder what kind of fuel she is putting in her tank. It is the nature of a sport that lost its squeaky-clean image long ago. Beginning in the late 1960s with East Germany’s state-supported doping program and continuing through the 1990s with a rash of failed drug tests by the Chinese, the pool has turned into a breeding ground for skeptics, suspicion and cynicism.

“Behind my back people are saying I must be using something,” Torres said. “I know it. I hear it.”

She has been tested for performance-enhancing drugs more than half a dozen times this year, and the results have been negative, said Mark Schubert, the national team’s coach and general manager. At Torres’s request, her blood is being drawn regularly so she can be tested for illegal substances like human growth hormone that cannot be detected in urine.

Germany to tender for Women’s Rugby Cup 2010
(IRB.COM) Friday 13 June 2008

The German Rugby Federation (DRV) today announced that it is submitting a bid to host the Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2010.

The DRV has teamed up with SPORTFIVE the leading sports agency to create a unique joint operation. The DRV and SPORTFIVE hope to convince the International Rugby Board (IRB) that a brand new host nation would be good for the top women’s event in world rugby and also boost the sport in Germany itself.

Germany’s senior men’s team has just won promotion to the top division in European rugby outside of the Six Nations tournament. Now the push is on to convince the IRB that a World Cup should be played in one of rugby’s fastest growing markets.

At a press conference in Hamburg on Friday, June 13th, the DRV and SPORTFIVE outlined how the rugby federation and the marketing, sponsorship and production agency would divide the different responsibilities that would face the hosts for the 12-team tournament scheduled for August and September 2010.

The joint venture is currently investigating three potential cities, Hamburg, Hannover and Heidelberg, as potential bases in which to stage a tournament that will comprise four pools, each of three nations. Eventually the German bid will probably focus on two centres.

The IRB has also received interest in staging the 2010 event from England, South Africa and Kazakhstan. Germany will present their bid document at the start of next month and the final decision on which country will host the event is expected in early September.

The President of the DRV, Claus-Peter Bach said: ” Rugby in Germany is an up and coming sport and following the success of our men’s team in winning Division Two last season we feel that this bid to host a global event would be a second big boost for the game in this country. Together with SPORTFIVE we are confident we could make a success of this exciting venture.”

Kirstin Wagner, a member of the German women’s team said: “For Germany to play against the likes of New Zealand and England here in our home country would be a fantastic experience for the women’s team and it would also be great for the German public to see in close up the strength of women’s rugby. As a team we would give everything to put on a good display against the elite.”

Richard Worth, Chief Executive Officer of SPORTFIVE, said: “All round the world SPORTFIVE specializes in helping sports federations and clubs to realize their dreams through our expertise in marketing, sponsorship, production and rights distribution. We are delighted to be partnering the DRV in this project which would open new frontiers for all concerned if Germany is given the chance to stage this event. WRWC 2006 in Canada reached record levels of global coverage of women’s rugby and we hope to further promote this exciting sport.”

The Tournament

Since that time the tournament has raised approximately $65,000. The TACKLE CANCER 10s is aiming to battle and beat breast cancer, the second leading cause of death in women. Please take advantage of this opportunity for CDP workshops in the South, they are few and far between. Beneficial to all coaches at all levels, and required for some. Anyone who even looks like they might ever coach your team should attend.

From personal experience I will tell you, it really is best to complete the on-line modules PRIOR to attending. You do build on that content in the workshops.

In my discussions with many of you, the topic that comes up over and over is lack of coaches for teams. Here is where you can train people who have shown interest but didn't have the skill set. Retrain coaches who might be coming back to your club. Keep your own skills sharp with new techniques and network with other coaches. There are endless good reasons for attending USA Rugby CDP Workshops.

See you there?

WANTED: Rugby Recipes

The best part of the Rugby Ruckosphere and the Internets is the abundance of information, ideas and creations out there. Here is another idea worth mentioning, Rugby Recipes:

WANTED: Rugby Recipes

The image of a rugby player is one of a hearty soul who plays hard, drinks hard and yes, eats hard too. So, I David Martin, captain of the Gentleman of New York, the New York RC Old Boys, and a former Manhattan, Miami Trident and FSU player, together with Meg Votta, a former Gotham Women's RC and New York Women's RC player have teamed up and are writing a cookbook based on the recipes and food stories of rugby players. We are in the early stages of compiling these for a book that will feature recipes from rugby players, friends, fans and families. We are looking for great and entertaining stories that center around food, some specialty you created or enjoy, anything that is connected with the worldwide community of rugby and enjoyment of friends over a meal and a glass.

One thing we hope to include is a range of dishes that reflect the international appeal of the game. A traditional South African dish followed by a recipe for New Zealand lamb and homemade Scottish Haggis could come just after your grandmother's recipe for Irish stew. There are a lot of chefs, restaurateurs and bar owners and we would like to include all your best in this book.

At this stage, we are compiling recipes, stories and names. Later on we will get back in touch with you and talk more about it and in many cases compile a small profile of the chef-rugger and perhaps get a picture of you running in for a try or serving up your favorite dish.

I look forward to reading your submissions. Please make sure you add your contact information, name, number and email address.

Send your recipes and stories to rugbyrecipes@gmail.com.

Cheers,
Dave Martin and Meg Votta

This weeks video comes from Lisa in Pennsylvania, she has played against Penn State a few times and has grown to respect their program immensely. This video is a snippet of a future documentary about the Penn State Women's Rugby Team by Wren Warner.

Looks like the documentary will be called Off to Do or Die. I tried to find more information on the upcoming film but Google failed me...if you have details, send them my way (email or comments)!

WANTED: Rugby Team in Amarillo, TX

Hi,

I was just wondering if you knew of any Rugby teams around Amarillo Tx... I will be moving to TX in a month or so. So let me know if there's anything in the area.

Thanks,
Yvonne

Little geography lesson here, Amarillo, TX is right smack between Alb, NM and OKC, OK...and I don't believe there is much rugby out there! I know there is a Midland men's team, but not sure they have a women's team...

Anyone have any tips on rugby teams closer than NM or OK for Yvonne? Shoot me an email at yourscrumhalfconnection@gmail.com or leave a note in the comments!

One day while perusing Facebook (yes, Your Scrumhalf Connection has a profile!) I stumbled upon some very pretty rugby images. I messaged Taylor, who had posted the photos and asked her for more details!

Taylor wrote me back and let me know that they are members of the Village Lions RFC and these images are from their 2008 calendar, available for purchase here. Keep in mind that they are hard at work for a 2009 Calendar!

So here are a few sneak peaks at the images and asked Taylor to let me know when the 2009 calendars will be for sale!
