Whew, tons of emails over the last few days! I have been wanting to put them all down in a blog, but I started my new job this week and I have been crazy busy! Swedish Ref!
This email is from the Swedish referee that reffed the Dallas Debutant Game in June, in Dallas, TX. He was such a good ref and we loved having him there! Plus the accent was fun to listen too as he made his ridiculous (only ridiculous, because all calls in the deb ball are ridiculous!) calls. I am reffing my FIRST official game this weekend, so I have been getting phone calls and emails wishing me luck all day today. The Texas Rugby Union has been REALLY supportive in women being certified and making sure we do it. The goal of the Texas Rugby Union is to have as many referees as possible and the more women...the better!

Penn State vs Princeton 67 - 3

In Saturday's match against Princeton, the Penn State women's rugby team could not have gotten its season off to a better start.
The Lady Ruggers dominated the game from the start, defeating the Tigers 67-3 on East Field.
"We played pretty good for our first game of the season," Penn State coach Pete Steinberg said. "I still think they [Princeton] are better than we made them look, but we have to work harder to get better."

Vassar Roles Past Yale 39 - 0

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 22, 2007) -- Last Spring the Vassar Women traveled to New Haven and lost a close one to Yale. So there were certainly some nervous players in the Vassar gray jerseys and a good deal of apprehension for this first divisional game of 2007-08. But after 25 minutes the home team had put some distance between themselves and the Ivy League visitors. However, the story of the day was that three rookies scored tries for the Brewers and that bodes well for the future.
The Yale pack gave Vassar problems right from the start. The home team never seemed to get a consistent drive but Yale were constantly penalized for crooked put-ins, collapsing, or they were wheeled. So Vassar was able to gain territory and apply pressure. The early nerves translated into speed off the mark and urgency in the first quarter of the game from the Vassar players. By contrast Yale was a little off the pace and it allowed Vassar to get ahead with two tries.

Rugby Star Gavin Henson has baby!
Charlotte Church is refusing to reveal the name of her newborn daughter.
The 21-year-old singer - who gave birth to the 6lb 10oz baby girl, her first child with her rugby star boyfriend Gavin Henson, on Thursday (20.09.07) - is keeping quiet about what the new arrival will be called.
Friends say Charlotte will give her daughter the middle name Maria in honour of her mother and grandmother who share the moniker. Maria is also the Welsh star’s middle name.

Below is our coach’s notes and some of my memories of the game combined. The Lady Raptors played well, but the blowout score doesn’t reflect how well Austin played. I think the notes below will show that!
The Lady Raptors of Glendale...Glendale Old Girl Lady Raptors?...Old Lady Raptor Glendale Girls?...whatever they are now they are the ones that used to wear pink and aren't allowed to by the club anymore (they "negotiated" to be allowed to keep the pink socks). They have an absolutely beautiful, though unfinished, new rugby stadium complete with Jumbotron. If you missed the game which was streamed live over the internet (yes, the 7 cameras to catch complete action were all working) then you may read the summary here. I may not be as glib as the announcers for the TV broadcast (recorded), Mediazone internet broadcast (live) or radio broadcast (live in Glendale), but I'll try to get the main points across.
We started the game a little shaky in the rucks but solid as a brick wall on defense by forcing a knock on right from the kickoff. CO was much larger than us, but our under sized scrum was strong all day long. Off this first attack the scrum was unable to avoid being spun but accurate tackling stopped the attack. Then CO had a beautiful passing combo to run around the outside but were stopped by a saving tackle by the Valks fullback. We recovered with 2 strong rucks and crashes to regain ground but eventually lost the ball on a poach by CO, this was due to lack of quick and assertive support by us.
Line outs were a bit sticky all day as each team was constantly being called for the ball not being thrown in straight. I do have to say that the ref choose an interesting place to determine that the throw wasn’t straight…he typically stood to the right of the scrumhalf that was on offense. So he was in the way of my pass if the ball was played AND how can you see if the ball is not straight from there? He based his calls on the “leaning” of the players, interesting theory in my opinion.
We were able to get a few barging calls because CO was jumping the engage and from then on the scrum was a bit more stable. One particular scrum down was put in by us, but CO spun it ninety and we lost the ball, resulting in another scrum CO’s ball. At this point, we put up an amazing defensive stand (for about 15 minutes!!) that included holding up a maul, several great tackles and pushing CO back about 20 meters before finally succumbing to a breakthrough on a dummy up the middle for 7pts.
A great kick-off by us, was followed by an excellent poach to steal the ball…and a picture perfect ruck all leading to a long kick from the base of the ruck. The kick was successfully ran down by the backs who forced CO out of bounds for a line to us. A backs crash by us is followed by a solid ruck and scoot by the forwards is then lost forward in the tackle. In the resulting scrum, we had great weak side defense of the scrum by the flanks and wing. This great pressure defense ended up in a line out for the Valkyries. From here there is a back and forth series for both teams for about 10 mins.
At the 25 minute mark an ill advised kick directly to the strong side wing leads to a CO try - 5pts. After the kick off, solid rucking and fringe defense push CO back and force a panicky kick to the our FB, who ran straight up the field, setting a good ruck. This phase was followed by several strong plays, gaining about 30 meters before an offside by CO gives us a penalty kick and then a line out in the green zone. We lose the line out, but steal the ball back in the ruck followed by a strong run and support only to lose possession on a hands in the ruck penalty.
Great pressure defense again leads to a kick away by CO in which we brought the ball back to the CO side of the field. This is followed by a great weak side run off of a scrum down for a 30 meter gain back into the green zone. We eventually lose possession through lack of support but regain the ball by spinning the CO scrum. 2 great crashes (backs then forwards) and good support is followed by a back and forth for several minutes before pressure defense gives us a line out on the CO 5 meter line with only a minute left in the 1/2...a good line and support but the ball is finally killed in a ruck by CO and time is blown.
Halftime score: CO 12 Valks 0
Our strength again in this half was defensive pressure, both on the fringe (post, X, Y) and in the line. Our weakness in this half was not sliding hard to the outside to cover overloads...we left our wings without defensive support and did not get out to help them. We were beaten to the outside once in the first half (off of a kick) and 4 times in the second (the other 2 trys were the 1st one up the middle and one try late in the game running weak off a scrum).
The only other try by CO was on a missed tackle in which the tackler took the wrong angle on approach...overall, tackling was strong all day. This is my favorite stat of the day, we were able to cause at least 12 knock ons by the CO backs . A great weak side scrum passed out to the backs and supported late in the game is eventually turned over by a knock on of our own. Late in the game we got a little lazy and tried to poach more than ruck and as a result lost a lot of ground and eventually the last try to the outside occurred.
Final score: CO 41 Valks 0
Penn State faces Long Time Rival Princeton, This Weekend

After meeting Princeton at four national championships in the last 12 years, the Penn State women's rugby team is prepared to once again face its long-time rival.
Penn State's A-side will square off with the Princeton Tigers at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow at the East IM Fields with the B-side game slated to begin at 5 p.m.
The Lady Ruggers, coming off a scrimmage win over Clarion on Aug. 31, are excited to see what the new season brings.
"It's the first game of the year; it's a time to get comfortable with each other," Penn State coach Pete Steinberg said. "We have new players this year, and it'll be interesting to see our continuity."
This past week at practice, the team has been focusing on team drills and working with forwards, backs and on scrums and lineouts. Steinberg believes his team is ready to "try new things before playing Maryland, American and Navy" later in the season.
Steinberg's players are also ready to face Princeton because they will be getting a chance to see how they work together and play as a team.
"I'm excited to play them because we finally get to play someone other than ourselves," senior flanker Alison Worman said. "We have a lot of new players this season; I'm excited to see what our team puts together."
Although Penn State is anxious to start its season strong, Steinberg wants the players to remember Princeton's strong rugby history. However, he thinks the Lady Ruggers experience will help them succeed on Saturday.
"Princeton has a fast team with good athletes," Steinberg said. "They are a young group this year because last year was a rebuilding year for them. They will come out strong, but I believe our more experienced players will help us in the game."
Coming off a national championship season, senior Nichole Lopes believes this game will test the team's ability to compete together against tough opponents.
It will also measure where they stand as a team on both the A- and B-sides.
"This is a game that counts, A- and B-side are playing," Lopes said. "This is a chance to see both sides and what we got."

Women's Rugby All-Americans Named

USA Rugby has announced the Women's Collegiate All-Americans for the 2006-2007 academic year. In this thirteenth year for the Women’s All-American program, players were selected based on their performance from the entire collegiate season.
Many of the athletes have repeated as All-Americans and others demonstrated their abilities with their respective territory's Under-23 team.
Out of nearly 10,000 women playing college rugby in 2006-2007, 32 First Team and 35 Second Team All-Americans were selected by a committee, with players representing 38 individual colleges. Those chosen will receive a letter and a certificate from USA Rugby and their respective school's club sports director will also receive a letter and certificate of recognition.
"The growth in collegiate rugby, its competitiveness and excellent quality of play continue to amaze us, thus making the committee’s decision process long and difficult,” said Women’s Collegiate All-American Committee Chair Alan Osur.
The committee consisting of Osur, Darlene Connors, Steve Murra, Nancy Kechner and Ellen Owens, represents a cross-section of rugby coaches and administrators. They received input from other coaches and administrators from across the nation and spent many weeks analyzing player performances.
The Women's All-American program was started by the Collegiate Committee in 1995 and has grown over the years as the number and quality of the players and teams have improved. Back in 1995, there were 167 collegiate teams, while this year more than 300 collegiate teams are in competition. Between 1995 and 1998, the committee named only first team All-American selections, but since 1999 both first and second team players have been selected.

I am listening to Big Papa (Notorious B.I.G.) as I write this post today...love that song! Also I'm working on the bible for the rugby trip this weekend. Don't know what a rugby bible is? Its something I had to learn about when I moved to Austin too! Basically its a book that the match secretary makes before matches or tournaments that entail travel.
The good book would include things like every one's flight info, phone numbers, location of the hotel and pitch and more. Sometimes they are serious and sometimes they are funny...just matters how creative everyone is feeling.
So the book is almost done, just waiting on the social or party information...we are only in Denver from Fri night until Sat night, so its a quick trip. The last quick trip we barely made it on the airplane because we were having adult beverages in the bathroom...and getting lost on the way to the airport! (With DD's of course!)
So anyways, we have a league match this weekend against the Olde Girls of Glendale (CO). We are playing in their BIG new fancy stadium, the first REAL rugby stadium in the United States. Check out their website for pictures, info and more.
We had to take roster pictures and send in an information sheet for submission to the jumbo tron! The girls were funny because the info sheet asked for their weight, I'm sure we had a few fibbers! So this will be a pretty sweet event, the game should be tough and hard...but joyous because we are playing in a rugby stadium! Another event I can check off in my Rugby Do's and Don'ts list.
So we will be taking 18 people to Glendale...the struggle with numbers continues. We have several players that have taken on new endeavors in their lives (houses, babies, new jobs...) and this has hurt and helped our team. Of course we want our players to be with us at all times, but life, love and careers do come first!
Sorry this is pretty much a vomit post, I haven't put words to paper or on the blog for a few weeks, so I wanted to get some of my thoughts out there. More later...

Referee & Coaching Clinics
On the Sunday (Oct 7) following the Cowtown Tournament, STRR will be sponsoring a field session on Laws/Refereeing from 9am-1pm.
They are bringing in Kevin McCaslin to help coach and evaluate the refs on Saturday at the tournament, followed by the field session on Sunday.
STRR would like to invite all club coaches and team captains to attend the Sunday session, where one of USA Rugby's top referee trainers will be working with our referees on practical applications of the Law. This will be an outdoor, informal session on the field where we hope to cover, for each set piece, and all loose phases (Tackle, Ruck, Maul) the key things referees should be looking at and how they communicate with players and captains.

32nd Annual Fort Lauderdale Ruggerfest
Hello! I am writing to invite the Austin Valkyries to the 32nd Annual Fort Lauderdale Ruggerfest, which will be held February 23rd and 24th, 2008, at Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek, Florida.
Ruggerfest 2008 will host the following divisions: women’s, premiere men’s, club/social men’s, and old boys’ (35+, 45+, 50+). The women’s division was won by the Boston WRFC in 2007 and by the Berkeley All-Blues in 2006. This year, we hope to expand our women’s division and improve the already high level of competition by inviting championship-level women's teams from around the United States, Canada, and England.
The fee to enter a team in the women’s division is $375, and there is a $500 cash prize for the team that wins the division.
With February temperatures in the 60s and 70s, high-quality men’s and women’s rugby teams from all over North America, and one of the best rugby socials you’ll attend all year, the only question to ask your team is: why haven’t we registered yet?
We are currently working on transportation discounts, and our hotel discounts are listed at the bottom of this email. So yesterday afternoon I headed up to Bagpipes after my interview in North Austin. I was prepared to watch 6 hours of World Cup Rugby! How exciting!
I started watching USA vs Tonga and after reading the comments on Goff, I agree and I disagree. The claim was that the Tonga players killed the ball the whole game, well yes they did. But the Eagles shot themselves in the foot too! Every time the forwards worked their butts off and made space for the backs, they knocked the ball on or had a serious mishandle! Overall the game was pretty disappointing and very physical.
The Eagles had a few key scoring opportunities, including that last breakaway by the winger, if he would have kept going straight...I really think he could have split the D and put one down between the posts. The Eagles don't play again for awhile, they face Samoa and then South Africa.
By this time a few of my teammates had joined me at Bagpipes and we started watching the Japan vs Fiji match. I was excited about this match because I like to watch the Japanese who are usually smaller in stature meet the challenge of a bigger team. The score for this game was close throughout the game, I kind of thought that Fiji would blow out the Japanese, but they played very well! They rucked very hard and had an almost impenetrable wall of defense. They were very organized and worked hard. It was a very exciting game and came down to making and missing kicks...make sure you hug your kicker today!
The third match we watched was Romania vs Italy. At this point about half the team was at the bar and being rugby players we were getting pretty excited and loud. We also were treating this event as an informal chalk talk where our new players could ask questions. We have three practices to our next league match and we will be putting 5 to 6 rookies on the field for that game. Numbers are getting better at practice but not everyone can afford to travel with work and money. We keep recruiting, but it is always a struggle. Anyways, the match was really good and we yelled out loud plenty of times and discussed that they ran a line out play very similar to ours. Good play, love it!
So to those of you gathering around in bars all week for rugby...cheers to you! Lets let everyone know that it is the best sport ever and we want everyone to know that!

Here's how everyone finished out. The men & women were setup as a 5 team round robin and the winners were based on a point system. Both SMRFC and SIU-B tied for 2nd and their head to head match was a draw. SMRFC won by overall tourney match points. In the women's open the Sabres and North Shore tied as well but the Sabres won the head to head match and thus took the 2nd place trophy. There was some really good competition for the beginning of the season and it was great to see the A Sides shake out the cobwebs. Looks as if rookies got plenty of field time as well.

Penn State Looks Towards Final Four Again

For 14 of the last 15 seasons, the Lady Ruggers have competed in the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union (MARFU) Final Fours and traveled to eight of nine national championship matches -- winning it all last season.
To continue down the same path, the team decided its goals this year were to develop a team mentality and to hone individual skills. The team also wants more members and less-experienced players to come out and learn the game of rugby.
"We have to remember how hard it was [to win] last year," 12-year head coach Pete Steinberg said. "The team sacrificed a lot to win. We are good, but we have to remember what we gave up [to win the championship]."

Women's Rugby Scores Big Win Over Air Force

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 8, 2007) -- As season openers go this one had its fair share of knock-ons, poor passes, and rusty play. Air Force had played on Friday against Army at West Point’s $6 million dollar rugby facility, Anderson Field, so they could be forgiven as no doubt they were sore and tired. Vassar was fresh but nervous as this was their first game since last April. In an absorbing yet slow paced game the final 3 minutes saw 3 scores and a roller coaster of a finish.
Vassar hosted Air Force Women at the Farm and under a sunny sky they made the best of starts. The Brewers established field position in the Air Force half and put them under immediate pressure. The scrums and line outs functioned well enough and from a forward drive Elise Okusami got the ball and drove over to put Vassar 5-0 up. After 15 minutes a lovely break by Alex Milne right up the middle was just the ticket for the home team as they went up 12-0 with the successful conversion. Vassar suddenly realized that this game was theirs for the taking! They had to continue to harass the visitors and jump on the mistakes. But Air Force also stepped up their game and got right back in to the game late in the first half with a break away try down the right wing. Vassar’s Morandi Hurst on the left wing moved in to make a tackle and was beaten by the pass so it was Vassar 12 and the Academy 7.

Saint Mary's Huskies Win Opener Against Atlantic University

(Staff) - The host Saint Mary's Huskies opened the Atlantic University Sport women's rugby season with a 22-15 win over the P.E.I. Panthers yesterday. Shannon Carey, Megan Kinsman and Fiona McNutt had tries.
Madison vs Marquette

On Saturday Sept 8 our club hosted our first match of year in Madison against Marquette. With a new cheer and a determination to bet our long time rivals, Madison scored first in the first half. Andrea Larson started the competitive season off with the first try. The score now 5 to 0. Marquette also got on the score board in the first half with a penalty kick to bring the game to a close 5 to 3 score, Madison leading.
Madison fought hard to keep Marquette from scoring in the first half. Holding them at the 5 meter line for 6 scrum downs. Marquette was unable to score and Madison went into the half leading. As the second half commenced, Jamie Rogalla of Madison got a break away off a pass from Hope Reddington near half and ran it in for a try. Catie Mahon was able to convert with the kick and Madison took a larger lead 12 to 3. Again for the forward, Mary Hanks got a break away and took the ball in for another try to give Madison a 17 to 3 lead. With a conversion by Catie Mahon, 19 to 3.
Madison went on to hold Marquette University from scoring and the first game of year when in the books as a win for Madison. Team played very well together and look forward to playing UW Stevens Point this weekend.

While most of us are amped up about the Rugby World Cup, we can't forget there are other sporting events happening around the world. Women's soccer, is in the foremost part of my mind. It is a new young team this year and they are expected to go far. Check out this guy's blog as he covers what else is going on in the world.
Women Needed as Referees

More referees are needed and once recruited must be trained. The recruitment and training of referees is the main responsibility of all clubs in Texas. The goal for the TRU is that EVERY club have at least one certified referee.
I challenge all of the women's rugby teams in Texas to work towards this goal. The Austin Valkyries are the only Women's club team with registered refs right now. Meg Pace and Wendy Young just recently went through the class and received their referee certificates. Expect to see them on the pitch playing and refereeing this season. If interested please email Dave Jenkins at davejenkins@houston.rr.com.
Stay tuned for more referee courses at they occur in the Texas area. There are currently NO referee courses scheduled, but there is a Coaching Certification courses:
